WE NEED A PARADE!
Free public installation, The Historic Newport Town Spring, RI September-October 2020
E.A. KAHANE was the mastermind behind an expansive free installation at The Historic Newport Town Spring in Newport, Rhode Island. The images below show various stages of the site, which was completely transformed from it’s original state. Grass was planted and a path created in order to walk through the space in a dynamic way. This installation follows the old adage, 'if you build it, they will come." And they did, visitors wore masks and visited the site, posting pictures to social media. Welcoming friends old and new, Kahane was present for most opening hours, sharing stories with people who were at the 2016 parade. The exhibition offered the opportunity to connect, not in the same way as the original parade viewer, but in a new way, that is just as personal.
The photographs, 125 in total, half were around the perimeter at 60” x 44”, and the spectators were printed 24" x 36", as if they were watching the parade. All the photos were printed in the artist's studio on material which could withstand the natural elements. This body of work is now part of the archive of the Newport Museum of Irish History, and in the permanent collection at the Newport Historical Society.
